I stayed at the InterContinental Ljubljana (pronounced Lu-b-ah-nah) for 4 days. This city/country was chosen because of its proximity to Croatia, and I had seen a video on the city that seemed interesting. The hotel was fantastic: the room was huge, the bathroom made me dance, and the best part was that I had lounge access meaning free breakfast and evening appetizers (sometimes can sub for dinner). They had one of the best breakfast selections that I’ve had in the other hotels.
I arrived in the afternoon and after getting settled in my room, I headed out for lunch and explore. There were several little eateries steps from the hotel and 2 small grocery stores. I decided on a slice of pizza since it would be quick. I headed to the city center and found the shops and a few historic sites. I didn’t do much exploring because I planned to come back the next day when I had more energy (I’m usually tired on travel day).
Rested and ready to see the sights, I went back to the city center and further. I also rode the electric city train (similar to hop on/off bus) that went up to the castle.
The next day, I took a tour to Postojnska Jama for a castle (inside a mountain) and cave below the castle. When we arrived in the area, our guide mentioned that the area had flooded a few days ago. He said that the cars were covered and buses halfway. I new exactly which day this occurred because in Ljubljana it POURED that evening. I was out getting dinner and the sky opened up. I tried waiting out the rain for about minutes, but decided to make a run for it. After all, I was only so many steps from the hotel. The rain and wind destroyed my umbrella but I made it to the hotel in one piece.
The castle had some great views and you learned a little history in the room. We then headed to the cave and rode a train into the cave for 15 minutes and then walked for an hour. The cave was breathtaking. We went through narrow entry ways and up and down slippery slopes. This was one of those places you had to witness in person because the pictures can’t really show what was actually seen.
I’m glad I made this visit to a city I had never heard of. Enjoy the pics below.
